The Wilgas Simmentals

The Wilgas Simmental Stud comprises the core breeding herd of what was formally known of the Lavarta Simmentals along with selected genetics bred and purchased by Joel Trim and Courtney Newlands. The Wilgas (as it’s known) is based in Duri, NSW where Joel and Courtney are raising their four children Xavier, Mason, Claude and Vaeda. Their herd consists of predominantly Traditional Simmentals and includes many influential and desirable genetics well known within the Simmental Breeding Industry.

How did it all start?

Joel’s passion for the Simmental breed stems from his Grandfather Claude Trim, who ran Monreid Simmental bulls over a large Hereford herd on the family farm of 13,000 acres at Collarenebri before retiring to Tamworth. Joel and his brother also had a small herd of traditional Simmentals at Kyogle while both in school.

Courtney was introduced to Simmentals by the late Gary Rahley of Aussie Park Simmentals whilst at high school and later continued pursuing her dream of running a Simmental Stud in 2010 when she became co – principle of Lavarta Simmentals alongside Mervyn Newlands running around 100 stud breeders comprised of Red, Traditional and Black Simmentals.

Along with running and managing the stud operation and raising a young family of four with his partner Courtney, (which are both big commitments) Joel also works as Mill Supervisor at Killara Feedlot which is a supplier of quality cattle to both domestic and export markets, with feeding programs ranging from 70 to 150 days. Killara supply high grade, grain fed cattle to a number of loyal long-term customers throughout Australia. This role means that Joel is continuously exposed to a variety of cattle breeds, their performance, and the importance of professionally managed nutrition. These learnings are then used to inform decision making around animal selection and the preparation of sale bulls to ensure longevity and that animals are not overdone with preparation.

Our Aim

The Wilgas strive to produce well balanced, structurally correct, easy doing and low maintenance bulls to suit diverse Australian conditions. Joel and Courtney have successfully sold bulls into Emerald, Northern Rivers, Walcha, Cowra, and the Southern Tablelands to name a few locations.

At the Wilgas we believe that the Traditional Simmental has a bright future as the preferred cross of choice over high grade Bos Indicus cattle and we are dedicated to breeding for the all-important Queensland market. The Wilgas has also established an impressive battery of AI Sires which will become a focus in the coming years and we look forward to presenting bulls with some exciting new genetics suitable for the Queensland commercial or stud cattle producers in the years to come.

We look forward to meeting you at the Queensland Simmental Bull Sale in Spring 2021.
