Our breeding
Our breeding program is focused on consistent, high-performing female lines that are fertile, structurally correct and wean heavy calves. We believe that the cow herd is the driver of performance in the beef industry. We select for industry relevant traits including: calving ease, carcass weight, fat coverage and performance on grass and grain. To achieve our goals we have and continue to heavily use embryo transfer and artificial insemination. To continue to improve our cow herd we source the best sires we can find globally that are backed by strong female lines and display the traits that our commercial clients require to put more money in their back pocket. Our commitment to sourcing leading global genetics is demonstrated by travelling to visit leading Simmental cattle studs in North America and selecting embryos and semen from the lines that we believe will suit our Australian conditions.
We have a commercial focus, putting more beef and hence income into our clients’ pockets. As a result, our stud herd is run under commercial conditions alongside our commercial herd with very limited supplementary feeding. Typically, we use Simmental and Simmental cross females as our embryo recipients and expect these to perform to the same high standard and demonstrate the value of our genetics. Our herd is run in a high-rainfall coastal environment, therefore our cattle must be structurally sound and have excellent feet to survive. We understand the Australian beef industry is majority grass fed therefore our cattle need to perform in this environment to bring the most benefit to our clients.
